What inspired you to start creating art?

Benjamin Mandre : "I have been drawing, painting and photographing since I was a child. It's a natural part of me and I couldn't be without it."

What is the core message you want to convey through your work?

Benjamin Mandre : "If there is one thing that art can contribute to the world in general, it is to give birth to new thoughts in the viewer. To see things in a new way, or to evoke a strong emotion. My message is to stop, look and feel more often to understand the world better. How does this material feel to the touch, what does an insect do when it sucks nectar from a flower, or how the natural cycle works. I think it can help us realise how fragile nature is and what is our role here on earth. I also believe it is important for people to maintain an emotional relationship with nature."

His art encourages viewers to pause and connect with the natural world, fostering a deeper understanding of its fragility and our shared responsibility to protect it.

Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration?

Benjamin Mandre : "I have always had a fascination with nature. I like to study it and understand how it works. But really, there is potential in almost everything that surrounds us. There might be something interesting in an image that flickers on the internet, a person I see on the street, a material or texture I haven't seen before. Then I have to investigate it further."

Benjamin’s fascination with nature and its cycles drives his creative process, yet his openness to the unexpected in everyday life reveals a versatile and curious mind.

What aspect of your creative process is most important to you?

Benjamin Mandre : "I have different working processes depending on what I want to achieve. Often I have a clear idea of a phenomenon I investigate. Then the research process is important to understand how it works, but also how the AI responds to different inputs I give it. Sometimes, however, I can start from the other end, giving rather vague instructions and then letting the AI work more freely. AI has great potential to liberate us from habitual thought patterns. Many of the most successful methods developed by the surrealists are inherent within AI, such as the readymade or the automatism in which the artist suppresses conscious control for a moment. That is very interesting to me."

His integration of research and AI experimentation reflects a commitment to breaking habitual thought patterns, echoing surrealist techniques to unlock new creative dimensions.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in art?

Benjamin Mandre : "Start with your own beliefs. Be open and curious. Be stubborn. Let it take time. Creating is a painstaking process of which inspiration is a small part. But mostly it's just hard work, and it will pay off in the end."

Benjamin’s advice to embrace curiosity, persistence, and the patience to let creativity unfold over time underscores the transformative power of hard work in artistic success.

It has been an honor to explore the thoughtful and inspiring artistic world of Benjamin Mandre through his words and creations. His dedication to understanding the natural world and blending it with cutting-edge AI techniques challenges perceptions and fosters meaningful reflection. Art Beacon Gallery is proud to support his journey and looks forward to the transformative works he will create in the future.
